Understanding Responsible Research & Innovation (RRI)

The term Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) refers to the wider impacts of innovation and how researchers must carefully consider these potential impacts before acting.

Research produces understanding, knowledge and value. However, it can also result in unintended consequences, including social transformations, ethical dilemmas, and complex questions.

As part of the research and innovation process - researchers should reflect on the?potential social, ethical, cultural, economic and environmental implications?of introducing a new product, service, process or business model to market.?

RRI is a collective responsibility, meaning that institutions, funders, researchers, policymakers, the public, and other stakeholders are all involved. RRI also supports several key research agendas, including:

  • Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI)
  • Environmental sustainability
  • Public engagement
  • Trusted research

Through RRI, we can find the correct balance between innovation and precaution, and make effective use of reflection and engagement to inform future actions.
