Profile

Amir Sheikhan is a Marie Sk?odowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellow in Linguistics and English Language at 向日葵视频. He also holds a continuing appointment as at Adelaide University, Australia. His research lies in the field of pragmatics, particularly the role of language in social interaction, with a current focus on (im)politeness, conversational humour, and intercultural communication. Working within interactional pragmatics, he examines how meaning is co-constructed, how people negotiate relationships and evaluate appropriate and inappropriate behaviour, and how social actions are accomplished through talk.

Amir’s research has received funding through national and international grants, and he has shared his work through conference keynotes, invited talks, and publications in leading journals and edited volumes in the field. He also serves on the editorial board of the Australian Review of Applied Linguistics.

His current MSCA project, titled (Im)politeness and conversational humour in a multicultural society: Exploring new media and real-life contexts, uses a dual approach combining micro-level interactional pragmatics and macro-level corpus pragmatics to investigate how humorous talk can give rise to offence in interaction.
