Research Interests

I write fantasy and science fiction. My books have been shortlisted for various awards, including the Hugo, the BSFA award, and a British Fantasy Award. My most recent verse-novel, Calypso, was named one of the best books of 2024 by The Guardian and Esquire Magazine.

I use my research to challenge form and genre, producing both commercial prose novels and hybrid verse-novels. Some of the themes my work has addressed include: beauty / ecology and extinction / nonhuman voices / anthropomorphism / terraforming / mythological retellings and adaptations / utopias and dystopias.

I make regular appearances at major international events, including MCM Comic Con London and Worldcon. I also regularly appear at national and regional events across the UK.

Some of my work involves science-based collaboration. In 2018 I was the writer in residence at the European Space Agency’s Astronaut Centre in Cologne, and in 2025 I am working in collaboration with scientists at the Jodrell Bank astronomy facility.

I also run various projects that engage with writing for games. In particular – video games, board games and pen and paper RPGs.
